The Steelies are six welded fish that are installed in the median on 167th Street in Arlington. I was the lead designer and project manager, working ith Erika Bruss, Tim Johnson and Mike Nordine to complete the fish during the summer of 2018. I hadn’t welded in thirty years, but thanks to Mike’s Arlington Muffler Shop, we had great tools as well as a little technical backup. Erika and I had a lot of fun selecting the rusty whatnots, soliciting used parts from the Arlington Bike Shop, and helping Mike see some of his
muffler hardware in a whole new way! Tim was our stalwart grinder, putting a smooth edge on our handcut fish. Then they got a nice powdercoat finish, and I got to wear a city safety vest and help with the installation. It sounds so simple when you write about it!
